It’s simply the ability to motivate others to take specific actions.

Authority is granted but always has defined limits. Power is earned and can be limitless. Authority is derived through the position. Power is derived from an individual’s personal influence, which increases effectiveness. Two leaders in exactly the same position of authority can and will have different amounts of power. A person can possess a great deal of power and absolutely no authority. Conversely, someone can have authority and absolutely no power. Leaders who have not earned sufficient power sometimes make the mistake of trying to influence others by overexerting their authority. But excessive use of authority can cause employees to rebel in much the same way that children rebel against restrictive parents.

Effective leaders recognize authority as a valuable and necessary tool when used judiciously, and they invoke their authority extremely sparingly. Instead, they use the power they have earned to create a climate of trust, cooperation, and accomplishment in which people are positively motivated to pursue their own goals and the goals of the organization. In fact, the amount of responsibility you take on is directly linked to the amount of power and influence you possess. One way to further increase your personal power is to seek additional responsibility.

To be a successful leader, you must always be yourself. Be intentional about shaping your life according to your values and priorities. Trust yourself, believe in yourself, and be honest with yourself. Others will then trust, believe, and be honest with you. It is this foundation which enhances personal power. Excellent team leaders establish healthy open relationships with others. They foster mutual commitment in the pursuit of shared goals. Effective leadership is founded on cooperation never coercion. Make an effort to increase your income. You can make more money by putting in additional hours at work if possible or take on some work on the side.

Once you have reduced your monthly expenses and increased your income, you can focus on saving money. Set aside as much money as you can each month.

Finally, remember to be thankful for what you have. Take a look at the prosperity you already enjoy and be happy for what you have earned - this will help you to feel more prosperous.

Here are some tips.  It’s very interesting how opinions have changed over the last few years in marketing about what your free giveaway should be. I don’t mean the format it should take (i.e report, e-book, newsletter etc), but what the topic should be and the type of people it should attract.

I know I’ve certainly changed my opinion.

For the last few years in my business, I’ve been giving away lots of free stuff to promote my business and you know what, it’s got results. I’ve attracted lots and lots of new contacts to my business and they’ve all been very happy to give me their contact details.

The theory then goes that once they’ve given you their contact details and therefore expressed interest in what you do, they should go onto buy from you, right?

Well no actually. Not necessarily.

The chances are actually much higher that they’ll grab your free giveaway with both hands and you’ll never hear from them again.

Now I’m not saying that offering a free giveaway is the wrong thing to do, but you must be very careful with what information you give away in order to attract the right people to your business.

If I offer 50 free ways to promote your business, who am I attracting with this information?

I’m attracting people who DON’T WANT to spend any money on marketing.

Is that who I want to attract? Well, no not really.

Who I want to attract are small business owners who want some help with their marketing AND who are willing to pay for someone to help them with it.

Could I change my free offering to attract these sorts of people? Absolutely. While I may not as many people signing up, they would be much more qualified and therefore much more likely to turn into clients.

While this doesn’t mean that I’m not going to give these people free information, what they do get will

a) much more tailored and personalised to them and

b) much more likely to result in sales.

So if you currently offer something free to your contacts in order to get them to sign up for something, make sure that what you’re offering appeals the right set of customers that you’re trying to attract. Something that attracts people looking for free help such as my 50 free ways to get more customers, is not going to do much for your business and you may be disappointed by the results.

4. You look cool if you make a funny joke: Ever have a one-liner that had everyone in your group in stitches? Me neither, but I’m working on it;) I bet it’s a great feeling to make someone laugh.

5. Laughter brings people together: There’s nothing quite like sharing a laugh with somebody. It creates lasting memories and is enjoyable in the present.

6. Because Stone, Cold, Said so!: Ok, this isn’t a real reason, but does anyone remember Stone Cold Steve Austin? Oh, the days of wrestling…

So it isn’t important why I chose six reasons to laugh every day, but it is important that you should laugh as much as you can. Choose your own reasons to laugh. As the saying goes, “Life is too important to be taken seriously.” Being serious all the time sucks. You have to enjoy life. You do not know how well you can do something without doing it. After learning the procedure of daily routines, we usually do not even think about it. Our subconscious mind directs us to automatically go through the same motions over and over. New things force us to get off auto pilot and reinvent ourselves. Discovering where you belong is a matter of which one fits you unique abilities.

Being creative does not necessarily constitute inventing something. It can be improving processes or procedures. When you find a position that fits your personality and way of doing things, it will come naturally and you will begin to stand out from others. You will begin to have fun and your passion will propel you past mediocre to excellence. You will know this is what you were meant to do.

The importance of discovering the job that was meant for you is obvious. It is difficult to excel if you dislike your work. The only way to find your niche is to try different things. When jobs are scarce, it may not be practical to change companies, but you may be able to go to a different position in the same company.

Learning different positions in your company could eventually qualify you to be the boss. Trying several, types of positions will enable you to zero in on the absolute best job for you. The importance of getting out of you comfort zone may not be obvious but it has to be done to move up in your career. The uneasy feeling of new surroundings will go away when you get used to it.

Trying several new things is crucial for discovering your creative side. Doing what you love will change your whole outlook on life. Instead of dreading to go to work, you will look forward to it with eager anticipation. You will be amazed that they pay you for having fun. It is no longer just a job. It is part of you. You will take pride in your work, and make it as perfect as possible.

Your creative side will show up and show out and you will begin to see ways that methods and procedures can be improved. You will take delight in showing others the ropes. Others will observe how you have a feel for your work and will ask you to explain it to them. This demonstrates the importance of trying new things.

Become jack of all things and master of none? No. The point is that you cannot discover your creative side without trying several things. It is not only important to find the right job, but the right people that you can work with. Life is too short to put up with those who are difficult to get along with. Have you considered where all those other things “that need changing right now” came from?

Your thinking is the beginning of what you say, do and believe. What you say do and believe become the foundation of all those unwanted “things.”

Thinking something once or twice, unless it is under special circumstances, is probably not enough to form an unwanted habit. It is thinking something over and over again that creates two habits:

•thinking
•behavior

You can try to change the behavior habits all you want but until you change the associated thinking habit the behavior will just keep coming back.

You might think okay, just stop the unwanted thoughts. That is a good idea but it creates a vacuum. That vacuum sucks all those thoughts right back sometimes stronger than before.

Replacing the unwanted thoughts works better. It avoids the vacuum.

In order to replace the unwanted thoughts with the wanted ones you have to develop an awareness of what you are thinking. Sometimes the thoughts are not at a conscious level. If they remain subconscious then you get a feeling. So, pay attention to your feelings too.

There are four effective techniques to increase awareness then switch to desired thinking habits:

•Give yourself a mental note to notice a particular thought/feeling and then switch it.
•Make yourself the mental note whenever a particular thought or feeling comes up ask a particular question.
•Wear a rubber band around your wrist and snap it every time a thought/feeling comes up.
•Wear a particular bracelet or ring and every time a thought/feeling comes up switch it to the other hand.

Changing a thinking habits can take time. Every time you catch yourself in the unwanted habit you have to stop, switch and start the desired one.

You may want to have small goals or practice sessions. You may want to say to yourself “For the next 5 or 10 minutes my only thought will be the desired ones.” If you succeed give yourself a small reward. Then start another short practice session. As time passes and you are going the 5-10 minutes with only the desired thoughts then lengthen the session time. Repeat this process until you are thinking your desired thoughts for a day; then a week and then a month.

You may not want to make a big deal of not meeting your goals. You attach energy to the unwanted habit if you make a big deal of a failure. That attached energy acts like a rope to tie the failure and unwanted habit to you. You release the unwanted habit and energy; or “untie” the rope by allowing the failure to just pass. Now, you are ready to start your wanted thinking again.
